New Quiz for young visitors

A new quiz sheet leads young visitors around the ancient church and on a churchyard trail in search of answers. The illustrated sheet explains some of the special historic features of old All Saints' Church.

Highlights include finding the seat of a real smuggler, a gravestone with a 'Smiley'-faced angel and a knight who lost his head. There are no prizes other than the satisfaction of finding all the answers.

Churchyard Survey

Volunteers from the Friends Group have made a detailed survey of the gravestones in the churchyard. Many have already collapsed and several more are leaning at dangerous angles; two were overwhelmed by gravity and collapsed during October.

There is genuine concern that visitors to the churchyard, children in particular might be seriously hurt if a heavy gravestone should fall on them. Members of the Friends Group are approaching a number of organisations for funding and practical assistance to make the churchyard safe.

Restoration of the
Funerary Hatchments

Funerary Hatchments are a form of memorial to the departed. Almost always diamond shaped, they feature a painted representation of the coat of arms of the deceased's family.

Four were rescued from the former 'smallest' church in Upleatham; two are in reasonable condition but the other pair are in a ruinous state. They are currently in safekeeping at the museum store at Kirkleatham and are placed on display in All Saints' Church during the summer open season.

The Friends of Skelton Old Church have now raised £10,600 to cover the cost of fully restoring the hatchments.
